Description
In 1857, the SS Central America was headed to New York, carrying 578 passengers and crew, along with 10 short tons (9.1 t) of gold from the California Gold Rush. The “Ship of Gold” encountered a hurricane off the Carolina coast and sunk in 8500 feet of water. The loss of gold, valued at the time at approximately $8,000.000, shook public confidence in the economy, triggering the Panic of 1857. Over 130 years later, in 1988, the ship was located and significant amounts of gold and artifacts were recovered. A second successful recovery operation took place in 2014. Only 4 Recovered. Includes box and COA.
